Bringing Home Our Boys is a multimedia project designed to educate and bring attention to matters regarding male suicide. The scope of this project involves the use of various formats to explore the different aspects of this chosen topic. This includes audio narration, video interviews, statistics-based infographics and visual storytelling through pictures.

 

To achieve our goal we have set out to primarily interview men who have experienced mental illness that can provide an insight into why male suicide is such a prevalent issue – and just as importantly why more needs to be done to prevent this being a common problem. Along with this, we have spoken to people who work in the mental health industry to gain professional and academic insight into the shocking statistics surrounding male suicide.

 

The topic itself is one that has been considered taboo in the past and still does not receive the coverage it deserves. Bringing Home Our Boys is not only designed to bring awareness to the issue of male suicide, but to also help break the stigma of openly discussing an issue a lot in society would rather not face.

 

Throughout this project we aim to follow established ethical guidelines and treat this subject and anyone affected by it with the utmost of respect. 1 in 2 Australian men have suffered from mental illness at some point in their life. Let’s try and change that.
